I like it! I like how the room is white and you're coming from darkness. I can tell you put a lot of thought into the project and that makes me smile :). I'm glad you're in the class.

I didn't notice the white room until I read Lisa's comment. Good stuff, Matt.
One thing I don't like about your photo is that it's hard to see the top of your head. I don't know how I would have fixed it, however. Just something small.

It doesn't seem like you are coming out of the darkness, except physically, in that the room behind you is dark and the reoom you enter is lighted.
You don't seem to be coming out of the darkness spiritually because your head is down with a doleful expression.
More light in the foreground (a more whiter room and more light on your figure) and a hopeful or even smiling expression with you looking at the camera would have added better to a spiritual as well as a physical "coming out of the darkness".
